Free word processor and more- OpenOffice

I absolutely LOVE OpenOffice- it’s like Microsoft Office only completely FREE!  It is open -source office software, is available in multiple languages and works on all standard computers.  The programs can open files in other formats (I can open Microsoft Word documents in OpenOffice Writer) and is incredibly easy to use.  Check it out!

The software download comes with the following products:

  • Writer- word processor and desktop publisher (just like Word)
  • Calc- spreadsheet (just like Excel)
  • Impress- multimedia presentations (just like PowerPoint)
  • Draw- graphic editor (just like Paint)
  • Base- database program (just like Access)

I got really tired of the need to upgrade my Office program every time I bought a new computer.  How many times do I have to buy this program?  Don’t get me wrong, I do use a few Microsoft programs, but I’m completely sold on OpenOffice.  Easy to use, and it’s free.  Good deal!

Free Online Grammar Check

My word processing program has a built in spell checker, but not a grammar check.  There are a lot of different websites out there but the best one I found for free grammar checking is Paper Rater.  Keep in mind it is free, and you get what you (don’t) pay for!  It isn’t bad, though, and did catch some of my errors.  If you have issues with commas or over-using words, you may want to have someone else proofread for you, or look at the second option below.

The best way to go, especially if you are a full-time writer, is through a paid service.  Right now the top grammar checkers are:

1.  Grammarly:  checks and finds nearly everything.  Grammarly works online so there is no downloading of programs onto your computer.  Subscription cost: 1 month $29.95, quarterly $19.98/month, yearly $11.66/month.  Offers a 7 day free trial.

2.  WhiteSmoke:  finds most grammar errors, does point out comma mistakes and over-used words.  WhiteSmoke requires downloading a small program to your computer, and from there it will attach to your web browser so you can check the grammar right on your blog.  The pricing sturcture for WhiteSmoke is different as well:  1 yr license- general $79.95, 1yr license- professional (includes medical, legal and bio-tech profiles) $99.95, one time payment (of the professional version) $139.95).  Also gives you a free 7 day trial, although you can only paste a limited number of words into the text box.

3.  AftertheDeadline:  I haven’t had a chance to check this one out, but it sure does look interesting…I’ll get back to you on this one after I’ve used it for a while!

My oldest website…

Librarebooks.com is the oldest domain name I’ve ever had.  It’s been with me for many years and has had a lot of different faces and purposes, but I think we have finally found it’s ultimate purpose- a website dedicated to free educational resources.

I love learning and believe it should be a lifelong quest.  Learning empowers you and provides you with the skills to go anywhere you want to in life.

I’ve got lots of places to go, so let’s get started!

Enjoy the ride…
